It was in college that Bryan found his aptitude for wood sculpture. "Wood is hypnotically beautiful. You can look at a perfectly finished piece and its grain and rich deep surface are overwhelming. It can be like seeing one swirling frozen moment of a river. The currents, an illusion of a distorted river bottom, sunlight refractive off surface ripples-- it's all in there. I'm amazed more artists are not working with wood." Photography has been a big part of Bryan's artistic process. In 1998 he started creating sculptures specifically to be photographed with the human form. "The power of photography to communicate has impressed me. I believe these photographs express how I feel about my woodwork more directly than the sculptures by themselves do." Bryan's meticulous craftsmanship and improvisational combinations of forms blends into an art that has timeless beauty and a strong visual presence. Since graduating from Western Oregon State College in 1993, he has lived and worked in Portland, Oregon. << back |
